When downloading templates, some sites inform you which version of PowerPoint they were created for.  To check your version of PowerPoint, open the application, click Help, then About PowerPoint.  You can usually download templates intended for older versions of PowerPoint, but not for versions newer than the version you're running.  For example, if you have PowerPoint 2003 you could use templates from PowerPoint 2000, but not from PowerPoint 2007.
